We sat down with Catherine Tong - Founder of The Skin Wardrobe following her launch of MAKETHEMAKE in New Zealand. We chatted all things skincare, makeup, and the game changing brand that incorporates both.
Tell us more about what The Skin Wardrobe is?
The Skin Wardrobe is an online destination for professional skincare and skin-loving cosmetics. We curate Scandinavian brands which embody quality, effectiveness and simplicity at the forefront of skin innovation. Our products are vegan and cruelty-free.
How did the idea come about?
Tired of overwhelm in the current beauty industry, I wanted to create a safe haven of science-based skincare you can trust to deliver. I also don’t believe high-quality products need to come at a high price. I like to partner with brand founders who stand for the same principles in skincare and the way they conduct business - brands with an environmental and a social conscience.
Where did your love for Scandinavian skincare stem from?
For over 5 years, I lived, loved, married and had my first 2 children in Stockholm, Sweden. My job allowed me to work in Norway, Finland and Denmark. When I returned to New Zealand, I thought my journey with Scandinavia was over. When a good friend and skin entrepreneur, offered me her first private label brand MAKETHEMAKE, there was not a moment's hesitation. I quit my lifelong career in corporate HR, headed back to Sweden and it was there the idea of The Skin Wardrobe started to take shape.
You recently launched MAKETHEMAKE in New Zealand - tell us more about this brand?
Put simply, MAKETHEMAKE is makeup-infused-skincare. Developed by a team of skin therapists, this brand embodies high quality base makeup which is packed with active, skin nourishing ingredients. This brand is a new innovation in the makeup category, giving long term skin benefits.
What is your favourite product from the MakeTheMake range?
If I had to narrow it down I would chose those I am driving today - Our Bisabolol Oil Primer (super lightweight, absorbs quickly and calms the skin) + Vitamin B Flawless Foundation (I am colour N3). The result: an unbelievable finish which just gets better as the day wears on. Not to be forgotten, MAKETHEMAKE Sheer Foundation Brush. Tell us about your skincare routine?
Good skin routines shouldn’t mean hours in the bathroom - find a consistent routine and commit to it, morning and night!
Cleanse: Gel gentle foaming cleanser. This one’s a secret, sorry - as part of a trial of our new brand.
Essence: Skintology Activator Booster - a deeply hydrating essence which balances the skin and allows for high absorption of ingredients which follow.
Exfoliate: Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant - skin renewal and cell turnover.
Moisturise: MARIA AKERBERG Face Lotion Moist with Bergamot and Pachouli. We are looking to expand into Maria’s natural & organic face care range - watch this space.
As above with below steps added (and SPF removed):
Before Moisturiser: Skintology Hyaluronic Concentrate Serum
I also use a mask every week, sometimes twice a week! I alternate Skintology Stockholm masks, depending on my skin needs, either our AHA or Hydrating Mask
I also use Paula’s Choice Radiance Renewal Overnight Mask.
For hair and body I am obsessed with our MARIA AKERBERG bodycare range and use it exclusively!
Any future plans for The Skin Wardrobe?
Plenty! Our brands are continually innovating so our current collections will continue to evolve. We are also in conversations with an exciting new brand partner with regard to a full skincare range - it would be my dream to launch this before Christmas. We would love you to join us on our journey @theskinwardrobe to see what’s in store next!
